Batman (1989)

As you all know, Tim Burton's highly anticipated Planet of the Apes comes out this week. (If, in fact, it is completed on time.) I am looking forward to seeing it and hope it turned out fairly well. (Most Tim Burton movies do.) So, I tried to find something to tie a DVD review to Tim Burton and came up with this review of Batman.

Movie:   9/10

This is one of the best comic book adaptations around. (X-Men was quite good also, and then there's always Superman.) I remember my dad taking me to see this flick when I was a wee little tike and besides Star Wars, Batman became my second favorite movie. (I even had him come to my eighth birthday party.) For those of you who haven't seen the movie, you should. It deals with millionaire playboy (No, he's not a rabbit) Bruce Wayne. A rich businessman by day and the caped crusader at night. (Played perfectly by Michael Keaton, what ever happened to that guy?) Batman comes in contact with a crime boss and his number two man, Jack Napier (Jack Nicolson in one of his best roles). A heist at a chemical plant goes awry and Napier becomes the Joker and a major thorn in Batman's side. Along for the ride are Wayne's girlfriend, Vicki Vale, who the Joker is hot for. The story is quite good as is the first sequel. The only complaint I had was, not really about this movie, but about the series. In this movie, Batman is played by Keaton (as in the sequel Batman Returns) in Batman Forever he is played by Val Kilmer, and in Batman and Robin he is played by George Clooney. Also, Harvey Dent is played by Billy Dee Williams in this film and by Tommy Lee Jones in Batman Forever. My gripe is all about continuity. They should have given Burton the last two films or not have made them at all. However, this is a great film and a classic comic adaptation.

Video:   6/10

It's seen better days. It's only a shade better than the VHS copy. However, I was impressed with most of the darkness in the movie, which didn't come off perfectly clean, but good enough.

Audio:   7/10

It could be better, but at least it's 5.1. Elfman's score is classic. Maybe the rumored re-release will have new audio and video transfers, that would be cool....

Extras:   0/0

Nothing.

Overall: 6/10

(The movie and low price of around ten bucks make this a decent buy for fans. Otherwise, wait until the re-release comes out. Good flick though, such a shame.)

- Dr. Strangelove (aka Drew Morton)
