DVD Releases for 12 December, 2000

This week's lineup is pretty solid, if not violent. People die in every single major release. Okay, okay -- so Carl Sagan didn't actually die until later, but com'n, I almost had a common link. Anyway, here goes:

  1. Scary Movie -- I don't know what to say about his one. I saw it, I laughed -- but was it any good? I guess... There are certainly moments of hilarity amongst the deluge of lame jokes that fall flat. One thing can be said for sure, the Wayan Bros. are obsessed with oral sex. And despite the tagline, there will be a sequel. (groan...)
  2. Shaft (2000) -- John Singleton's update of the blaxsploitation classic, this time starring Samuel L. Jackson, as the original's newphew. Another good villainous performance by Christian Bale, but certainly a step down for Toni Collette after The Sixth Sense. Although entertaining, I hope this does not become a franchise.
  3. The Sopranos: Season I -- The only people I know who watch this watch it religiously, which means if you're one of them, you should definitely add this to your Xmas list. It's pretty pricey, so have moms n' pops buy it for you. MSRP - $99.98.
  4. Cosmos Boxed Set -- The award winning and extremely popular miniseries from the 80s comes to the digital format. You get 7 discs that hold all 13 one-hour episodes, interviews with Sagan and wife/frequent co-author, Anne Druyan, science updates, etc. For space buffs, this is definitely an owner. MSRP - $169.95 (!) Again, see #3 for puchasing tips.
  5. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker -- The second full-length (but again straight-to-video) Batman Beyond feature. Reportedly, this *was* really good. Then the WB lost its spine in light of all the bad press Hollywood's been getting, and cut out all the violence. I'm sure it's still cool, but when will American studios start making animation for (and ONLY for) adults?? Probably never...sigh.

On the Horizon:

12.19
The Cell (Platinum Series), Seven (Platinum Series), Princess Mononoke, Road Trip (Rated R, Unrated)

12.26

Til All Are One --
