DVD Releases for 5 December, 2000

After last week's fairly lackluster slate, this release schedule seems a bit better. Still nothing on the level of Gladiator or X-Men, but if you're a Nicolas Cage fan, Eddie Murphy fan, or civil war fan, you should be pleased.

  1. Gone in 60 Seconds -- Bruckheimer scores again, although not really a home run this time. More like a triple. Still made about $100M. If you like Bruckheimer movies, then you liked this one. A blonde Angelina Jolie was a nice touch.
  2. The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps -- Billed as a "Collector's Edition." I think they toss that moniker around a bit too freely these days. And what kind of world is it anyway where this movie gets a "Collector's Edition", but not Blade Runner??
  3. Gettysburg -- A good war movie missed by most. Although it had a limited theatrical release in 1993, this was shot as a made-for-tv movie. It runs about four hours long. Features Tom Berenger, Jeff Daniels, Martin Sheen and Sam Elliot. A must-have for civil war buffs.
  4. Bram Stoker's Dracula -- Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 retelling with an all-star cast -- Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves. (although Keanu has even admitted that his acting in this flick sucked like the good Count himself...)
  5. Groove -- the most buzzed about film at this year's Sundance Film Festival. Basically just an exploration of the San Francisco rave scene. I have my doubts about it's watchability.

Well, that's it. Check back next week to see what dvd's should get your hard-earned cash. Carl Sagan's 7-disc Cosmos series and the Special 2-disc version of Seven are on the horizon...
