DVD Releases for 24 October, 2000
DVD aficionados -- get ready to break out the checkbooks and/or credit cards -- this Tuesday is about as big as they come. There is something for everybody this week, and more than likely, several things. In order of my perceived relevance:
- Pitch Black - Unrated Version/ Theatrical Version -- easily the most surprising movie of the year. Who knew that this movie would make Alien seem lame? Once this puppy's in my hot little hands, it will be my new dvd demo disc for the opening crash sequence alone. This movie is Vin Diesel's greatest claim to fame. Riddick rules.
- American Beauty -- Sam Mendes' oscar winning look at disillusioned American suburban life. An owner by all definitions. Belongs in the same sub-genre right next to Fight Club and Office Space. (3 wildly different movies with essentially the same theme - cool)
- U-571 -- I find submarine movies to only be but so exciting, but I did prefer this to Crimson Tide or The Hunt for Red October. Nicely directed by Jonathan Mostow, and Jon Bon Jovi dies gruesomely. Excellent.
- The Patriot -- Braveheart for sissies. No seriously, I liked this movie, but you can't help but compare it (fair or not) to Mel's better work. A good effort, however, from Devlin & Emmerich, almost enough to redeem them for Godzilla. Star-making turn by Heath Ledger.
- The Skulls -- Josh Jackson and Paul Walker join a secret society at an ivy league school. Death, bad acting, and ridiculous situations ensue.
Others:
Airplane! and Airplane II: The Sequel; Star Trek, Vol's 17 & 18; Tucker: A Man and His Dream
