DVD Releases for 3 April, 2001

Well, by most accounts, this week's slate of new dvds is a bit lackluster... but that's not to say some of them won't find their way into your collections. There are some sleepers in here, and a couple of oldie but goodies as well. Take a look...

#1

Krull -- that's right - Krull! Remember this flick? As a child of the 80s I certainly do... Now I haven't seen this thing in about 15 years, so it's bound to be a lot worse than I remember, but I do recall this little sci-fi/fantasy tale sparking my imagination once upon a time. I think it'll fit nicely in between my Last Starfighter and Never-Ending Story discs. In any case, it's getting some dvd love, with a widescreen anamorphic transfer, a cast and crew commentary, a behind the scenes featurette, a "Journey to Krull" featurette, a Marvel Comics adaptation, photo gallery, and a couple other minor extras. And did I mention it's got Liam Neeson, and a score by James Horner? You could do a lot worse than Krull...

#2

The Legend of Bagger Vance -- Despite an agressive marketing campaign (this had to have been the most-run trailer of 2000) this Robert Redford-directed golf parable met with tepid reviews, and a so-so box office. The dvd release reflects that, coming with only a theatrical trailer and the HBO Special, "Robert Redford Storyteller." It's a fantastic cast, though, with Will Smith, Matt Damon and the ubiquitous Charlize Theron. Maybe this flick will find it's audience on video. Then again, A River Runs Through It hasn't exactly shown staying power through the years, and the two films have very similar themes. Anyway, you should read Shea's review here.

#3

Nurse Betty -- the quirky comedy starring Renee Zellweger, Chris Rock, Morgan Freeman & Greg Kinnear. I didn't see this one, so you'll have to check out John's review if you wanna know more. As for the extras, you'll get a pair of commentaries, some "A Reason to Love" soap opera segments, deleted scenes, trailers & tv spots, and everybody's favorite...easter eggs. Not bad for a movie that was in and out of theaters pretty quickly if memory serves correctly. You can read Shea's review here.

#4

The Natural -- once again a Robert Redford flick, but this time as the titular baseball hero of the New York Knights. Also stars Barbara Hershey and Kim Basinger. Along with Hoosiers, easily one of the best sports movies of all time. It's widescreen anamorphic, with a trailer, "Heart of the Natural" documentary, with Cal Ripken, Jr., and though not technically an extra, the score by Randy Newman is truly phenomenal.

#5

102 Dalmations -- I list this only because it is a new release, and maybe some of you out there actually have progeny... Anyhow, it's got a commentary (I'm sure you're kids are clamoring to hear it), three featurettes, not even including two entitled "Puppy Action Overload" and "Dalmation 101." Shouldn't it be "Dalmation 102?" Also take note that it also comes as a 2-pack with the first, and equally riveting film.

The Rest....
The World According to Garp, Lawrence of Arabia, Escaflowne Vol. 5 & Vol. 6, Cleopatra (1963): Five Star Edition, Being There, and Empire Records

Sexy Pre-Orders:
Stargate SG-1 Giftset (5 discs) , Men of Honor , Bounce , Space Cowboys , Billy Elliot, Requiem for a Dream, Superman: SE, Finding Forrester, Rocky Giftset, Spartacus: Criterion Collection, The Emperor's New Groove, Dungeons & Dragons, Best in Show, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Unbreakable, and Traffic.

Okay then. Til All Are One, or more likely, next Tuesday --
