DVD Releases for 13 March, 2001

Well, there's good news and bad news, and they're the same thing. You're gonna have to buy a few DVDs this week. Yep, the ol' wallet's taking a hit, because some pretty spiffy titles are hitting streets today. Let's jump right in:

  1. Almost Famous -- TNMC can't say enough good things about Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical 70s opus, but we tried. Read the five star review, either John's or mine. Chocolat getting an Oscar nod, and not this movie, is a damn crime. One caveat about this disc though -- it's pretty bare bones (the only extra is a director's cut with 30 extra minutes), so does that mean we'll get a better version later on? (like Dogma) I have no idea, but there are worse things then a bare bones Almost Famous DVD.
  2. Bedazzled -- The amusing remake with goofy Brendan Fraser and world's classiest babe, Liz Hurley. Don't feel bad about buying this one, because none of your friends will mind watching her for the better part of two hours. Comes with commentaries from Harold Ramis and Hurley, and two featurettes. Not a bad filler movie for your collection. Read the Club's review here.
  3. Book of Shadows - Blair Witch 2 -- Well, let's face it - everybody hates this movie, and the fact that it was even made, since it represents everything that is evil in hollywood. (though it pales in comparison to a potential Sixth Sense sequel....) Anyway, the concept behind the movie wasn't half bad. Former award-winning documentarian Berlinger pitched a story about the phenemenon caused by the first movie, rather than a straight sequel. Not the worst idea, but the potential wasn't fulfilled. Comes with a Berlinger commentary, and the cd soundtrack on the flip-side. Read the review, here.
  4. The Rock - Criterion Collection -- The definitive dvd of The Rock. Two discs, hours and hours of content including commentaries, interviews, documentaries, featurettes, outtakes, and who knows what else. In other words, time to chuck out that other version you already own, and ante up for the one.
  5. Wonder Boys -- the overlooked gem, that was released to theaters twice in an attempt to reach an audience. It never really did, but this is Michael Douglas at his best, and a solid flick all around. Comes with cast and crew interviews, a commentary, and a Bob Dylan music video.

The rest....
Ben-Hur (1959), Drunken Master 2, The Ice Storm, and Roughnecks - The Starship Troopers Chronicles: The Pluto Campaign

All right, so that's about. A pretty solid bunch of flicks.

Til All Are One --

- Ultra Magnus
