DVD Releases for 20 February, 2001

It's an interesting week of dvd releases. No bonafide blockbusters here, but a nice little set of titles that are sure to find various audiences. I'll definitely be picking up a couple of these myself, starting with -

  1. Highlander: Endgame- Ultimate Two-Disc Collection -- Not everybody loved this, but the general consensus was that the producers of this series had finally made a worthy sequel. Although the word 'sequel' should be used loosely since this movie ignores the original Highlander's mythology and opts for the television series story. (the prize has not yet been won, etc.) Well, this 2-disc set features the theatrical cut, a new cut that includes 12 extra minutes that supposedly has "more action, more steamy scenes, and an all-new ending", audio commentaries, deleted scenes, interactive game "there can be only one", behind the scenes featurette, dvd-rom content, and easter eggs. Needless to say, if you're a highlander fan that can accept the inclusion of the tv show mythos, you need this disc. You can read two reviews of this one - mine and John's.
  2. The Watcher -- Whoa, dude...I'm like, a serial killer. Is Keanu destined to become a modern day Mark Hamill? His three post-Neo roles have been somewhat lackluster, but hey - he gets to be Neo at least two more times! Actually this movie ain't half bad. Maybe just a quarter bad. James Spader is always pretty cool in my book. Check out Shea's review. This one's a little light on extras, though: production notes, bios, trailers, etc.
  3. Clerks: The Animated Series, Uncensored -- A must have for any Silent Bob and Jay fan. Not to mention the slacker heroes Dante and Randal. This thing got the axe pretty quickly on network TV, but don't be fooled -- this is good stuff. You get 2 discs, commentaries by Kevin Smith, animatics, multiple featurettes, DVD-ROM content, etc. The only drawback - 1.33 aspect ratio. But what can you do.
  4. The Doors: Special Edition -- about time. It's one of Oliver Stone's best, not to mention a truly mesmerizing performance by Val Kilmer. I mean, I still consider Val the coolest guy in Hollywood because of this movie and Tombstone. You get two discs, Stone commentary, "Road to Excess" documentary, behind the scenes, original concert footage, interviews, 43 (!) minutes of extra footage, multiple featurettes, and trailers. Probably more Doors info then you'll ever need, but buy it anyway.
  5. Dr. T and the Women -- commentary with cast and crew, interview with Altman, trailers and production notes. I can't really recommend this one unless you're girlfriend really liked it. Then again, it does have it's fair share of hot chicks. Read John's review.
