DVD Releases for 30 January, 2001

...still...reeling...from...Farscape finale...

But it's our favorite day of the week, and that means dvds. This week brings a bunch of new titles, though none really have widespread appeal. Never the less, some are real dandies, so here they are for your perusal...

  1. What Lies Beneath -- Michelle Pfeiffer, Harrison Ford and a few genuinely creepy moments in Bob Zemeckis' attempt at Rear Window-type thrills. Unfortunately, add this one to the growing list of movies critically impaired by its spoiler-giving trailer.
  2. Dinosaur (Collector's Edition) -- cool CGI + juvenile plot & dialog = rental. Disney really underachieved on this one, but at least the mousehouse did show some originality with Emperor's New Groove.
  3. Glory (Special Edition) -- yet another re-release of a first gen dvd. An awesome civil war movie though, so well worth the money. Great cast includes: Denzel Washington, Matthew Broderick & Morgan Freeman, amongothers.
  4. Manhunter (Limited Edition) -- little known fact : Silence of the Lambs was the sequel to this movie, originally a novel from Thomas Harris. Obviously, no Foster or Hopkins, but Michael Mann is at the helm. A decent movie, which rumor has it, will be remade if Hannibal does as well as everyone expects.
  5. Jesus' Son -- Billy Crudup stars in the adaptation of Denis Johnson's incredibly captivating book. Do yourself a favor and read it first, and then go watch FH's drug-laden misadventures. (I'm not allowed to say what FH stands for, but you can go find out for yourself)

Others:
Gundam Wing: Operation 5, Necessary Roughness, a couple of MST3K titles, If Lucy Fell, Space 1999: Sets 1 and 2, C.H.U.D. (quick challenge -- who can remember what this stands for w/o checking the IMDB? first to get it right wins...uh, nothing...), and last but not least...Cockfighter.

Til All Are One. Or next Tuesday. Whichever comes first.
