The voting for the awards is finally over. Below are the winners in the first annual Pan Down Awards. The awards were presented at a party April 1, 1999 for members of the Tuesday Night Movie Club.
Best Picture was a close race with Starship Troopers narrowly defeating The Big Lebowski. The club generally agreed that The Big Lebowski was the better movie, but Starship Troopers better defined the Tuesday night experience.
Spice World was the big winner, taking three awards, all of them in a landslide. Red Sonja, the club member who chose the movie said he was proud of the awards but still felt that the movie was greatly underrated.
Worst Kiss was the category that most polarized voters. While three couples were nominated for the award, two of them (Matt Stone & Trey Parker in BASEketball, Kevin Kline & Tom Selleck in In & Out) combined for 85% of the vote. It came down to which one was more disturbing to watch. In the end, excessive tongue clinched the award for Stone & Parker, better known for the creation of South Park.
Most Miscast Actor/Actress was also a fiercely contested award. Voters were heavily split on this one. The award eventually went to Matthew Broderick, who spent much of Godzilla with the look of a man who knew he had made a major mistake. Winona Ryder was the runner up for her appearance in Alien Resurrection. Appearance is an appropriate word, because her role made you think that some producer said, "I think we can get Winona Ryder. What would she do?" We're still waiting for an answer. Coming in third were Kurt Russell, making his best impersonation of a silent movie in Soldier, and Brett Favre playing himself in There's Something About Mary.
Worst Movie Line was actually a tie between "It's okay... cause I got to have you" from Starship Troopers and "I'm all about healing" from Urban Legend. The tie was settled by a coin flip, which gave the award to the line from Urban Legend. A tie also occurred in Worst Actor when voters couldn't decide between Neil Patrick Harris of Starship Troopers and Woody Harrelson of Palmetto. The coin flip favored Doogie.
I want to take a moment to thank everyone who voted. This was a lot of fun and will hopefully be even more entertaining next year.
